Ten Rules for Effective Business Dining
By Elite Business Communications
Did you know that over half of all business deals are finalized at a business meal? Also, job interviews will often include a meal as part of the interview process. Many times we are put on the spot and our table manners are on display.
Don’t assume that others will not notice or will be understanding of your poor manners. Making a good impression requires that you know the rules of dining - Here are ten rules to help you finesse a business meal.
#1 - Possibly the most important thing to remember when dining with clients or colleagues is that you are there to conduct business and establish relationships. You are not there for the food.
#2 - Steer clear of anything that is difficult to eat or very messy. Don’t even think about that big juicy hamburger! Spaghetti, lobster and French onion soup with lots of cheese on top are also not good choices. Order something you know will be easy to eat.
#3 - Place your napkin on your lap. Do not tuck it into your shirt or belt. It should only be used to wipe your mouth. Keep it away from your nose. It is not a handkerchief.
#4 - Make sure you know which bread plate and water glass are yours. Your bread plate is on the left and your water glass is on the right.
#5 - Wait until everyone is seated and served before you begin eating.
#6 - Avoid speaking with food in your mouth.
#7 - Do not use your fingers to push food onto your fork. Use your knife instead.
#8 - Ask for what you would like rather than reach across someone.
#9 - Do not engage in any personal grooming at the table. Do not apply lipstick, comb your hair or clean your glasses.
#10 - Avoid picking your teeth with your fingers or a toothpick.
The bottom line is table manners have a big impact on your professional presence. You want to avoid doing anything that will embarrass you or the people you are dining with.
