We are on our way to Orange County tonight. I’ve been looking forward for this trip. It is a meeting with our mastermind group. It took me a while to figure out why I needed a mastermind group. As a business owner, I’m an implementer. I get things done and I like to solve challenges. This is a good thing but I also tend to feel very lonely. It is hard to find people with whom you can talk about business growth, specific challenges that you face, like any other business owners and it is hard to grow if you are the only, or in our case, the only 2 thinking heads in a business.

These are the reasons I belong to a mastermind group. I can get fresh eyes in my business, accelerate business growth, the group becomes a sounding board for new ideas- this is very important because people tend to ask opinions from people that cannot give them an appropriate opinion, like friends and family. There is also accountability, you stepping out of the box, share sorrows and joy and of course the group can help you achieve milestones.

As business owners it is very difficult for us to do this by ourselves. We all need fresh eyes in our business every now and then.

This week I just want you to think how you are running your business and if you want to keep being the loneliest person on earth or look for ways to bounce back business ideas.

• Yellow Pages are difficult to track and have limited tracking options. Online marketing offers extensive tracking options.
• Yellow Pages reach can only go so far and if you advertise in more than one directory it can get very expensive. Online marketing has an unlimited reach and is very cost effective.
• You can only change your advertising message on a yearly basis with Yellow Pages. You can change your message online at any time.
• There are over 13 billion searches on the web/month and growing. Yellow Pages receive an approximate 1 billion references/month and is losing more and more customers that advertise in the Yellow Pages every year.

Outsourcing marketing efforts has become an essential aspect of business strategies. After all, you should focus on what you are good at and outsource the rest.

Outsourcing allows a company to put more focus on product development and overall operations. Many marketing agencies can often provide the same service as an in-house marketing department, but at half the cost.

By outsourcing you gain the following:

Specialized skills and expertise

More time- your most valuable asset

More implementation

Fast results

Every time you hear outsourcing marketing you think about how expensive marketing agencies are. Don’t forget that there are some Marketing companies that specialize in small businesses, just like BuzzBooster. They are not in the business of selling you on expensive advertising, they focus on other strategies like internet marketing, direct response marketing and social media marketing to bring you more exposure and more results.

Here are a few questions that should assist you in finding a marketing agency that is right for you.

Area of ExpertiseFind out what their expertise is in. What do they focus on? Here are common areas of expertise:

Search Engine Marketing and Optimization

Branding

Positioning

Affiliate Marketing Development and Management

Marketing Strategy and Plan Development

Internet Marketing Strategy and Plan Development

Lead Generation

Sales and Marketing Campaign Development

Marketing Classes, Seminars, and Workshops

Figure out what areas you need help in and look for consultants with expertise in those areas.

Training/EducationWhat type of training and/or education is important to you. I will tell you that education is important, however experience and hands-on expertise can far out weigh education when it comes down to success in marketing.Ask for case studies, referrals, and experience in the areas that you need assistance in.

Company AchievementsWhat are the notable achievements that the marketing consultant has achieved. What work are they most proud of?Ask them to show you examples of campaigns they run for other clients.

Small business owners know they need to be using the internet and social media marketing to promote their business. Many times they start doing themselves and after a while start questioning what they are doing because they don’t see any return on the time and money invested.

This is actually very common. Here is a list of things you need to know that do not work with social media in order to avoid wasting your time: – Trying to do a million things at the same time – Fail to understand that social media is a process and will not work overnight.

- Fail to see that an advertising approach will not work. – Trying to use social media tools without a strategy. – Not automating most of your social media efforts. – Confusing marketing with social media with becoming a social butterfly. – Using social media as your only marketing effort. – Believing you can make money with no work, no investment and do it overnight. – Buying every new product promising the above. – Join or use every new tool that comes up.

With the internet and social media marketing along came a huge line of new marketing consultants. Unfortunately a big chunk still live in their mother’s basement and never made a penny online. Even worse, they have no business experience. Getting advice from these people can cause you a lot of headaches and take your business down.

Here are several tips for securing talent that will save your project time, mistakes and money when choosing a Marketing Consultant:

- Meet 1 on 1

- Look at their work product, PR, past strategies, designs

- Ask about the products they have launched themselves

- Check the Alexa Rank and Page rank of their websites.

- Check their presence online.

- Ask about their revenue models online and check examples given.

- Have they won or been nominated for industry awards?

- References are nice, but really, who gives bad references?

- What specific, off-the-cuff strategies does the consultant propose?

- Do the strategies proposed seem cogent, offer fresh perspective?

- Check if what he/she is offering are real strategies or just a bunch of tactics you could learn from a book.

- Do they have hands on experience in business?

- Don’t price shop. Good consultants are not cheap. Here the saying “you get what you pay for” really applies.

- Listen to your guts.

A great conversation about being more productive with Facebook took place with Alex Mandossian and here are a few nuggets:

Tips to maximize Facebook for business

Want more people to visit the links you post
in your Facebook updates? Be sure to include the http:// before the
www to make them clickable links

Why not make a theme for each week for your posts

On a page, add events manually, rather than letting the event app
post them.Just copy the URL
of the event, and add as a link, along with relevant copy of your
choosing on the wall of the page.

You can subscribe to any Facebook page in an RSS reader and monitor
content from afar.

Connect the Networked Blogs application
(http://networkedblogs.com/) to your Facebook account. Then add
the rss feed from you main blogs. Next, select the option in the
Networked Blogs setting to post your RSS feed to your Facebook
Page. As soon as you have 20 people follow your feed your content
is syndicated on Facebook!

Create a Welcome tab and a default setting for first time visitors
to your page so that they can learn a little more about you and what
you do.

Research shows that people watch video on Facebook for an average
of 1-minute, 45-seconds

Life is not easy for a lot of people out there these days. Unemployment is high and people over 40 years old know that chances of getting a job will be a daunting task. The only way out for many people is to finally start their own business. The selling of franchises is on a all time high and a lot of home based businesses are popping up.

Starting your own business comes with a lot of challenges and money is always a concern.

From all the options out there, one that offers low risk and great profit margins is an information marketing business.

In a nutshell an info-business is when you turn your knowledge into products.

Information based businesses can have many formats and it is a lot more than just making an e-book.

The entry point to start an info-marketing business is really low, you can really start with a few hundred bucks. Compare this to a normal $200,000 to buy restaurant equipment for example; money that you will invest with no guarantees of success.

An information marketing business can be totally automated. There is no need to be face to face with customers and prospects the whole day which buys you back time to do the things you love and create more info-products.

In most cases you don’t need to have a staff. There are minor things that you can outsource and in some cases you will want to have a fulfillment company doing the fulfillment for you.

There is no need for a store front or office. An information marketing business can be run from anywhere.

Let’s not forget the profit margins in an info-business. They are quite tempting. For example, a CD will cost you around a dollar to burn and will be sold for at least $27.

Besides CDs, e-books, DVDs there are close to 40 different formats of info-businesses out there many offering residual income.

As long as you are passionate about a subject that other people are interested in, you can start your info-biz. You don’t need to understand technology, have degrees etc.

You might be asking yourself that information is available everywhere and anyone can Google anything and will find information about it for free, don’t forget that while this is true, people will always pay for knowledge they can apply right away and see results.

We are all very busy and researching for information can be quite frustrating. We all save time and money for specific information we can apply.

In times like this we need to improve our skills or acquire new skills. This is an opportunity for savvy people looking to start their own business.

I’ve talked a lot about QR codes and the possibilities it has for business, so, let’s talk about something close to codes today. We will talk about mobile marketing for small businesses.

As you probably have noticed, almost every one carries a mobile phone. Some of us cannot imagine life without a cel phone anymore and many families are getting rid of land lines because they have no more use for them.

When you think about marketing a business, most of the time we think how to reach them in a specific place. For example when they are online in a search engine on a social network or we try to reach them with direct mail or phone when they are at home.

Up to a short time ago we had no way of reaching people wherever they are. Here comes mobile marketing and QR codes, geo-based games like FourSquare and text messaging. All very powerful ways to reach your audience and if used properly, a great way to increase sales and do follow-up

Here I want to provide you with a list of things you could use mobile marketing, more specifically, text messages to promote, sell and follow-up.

You can send people a Today’s special

Buy one get one free

contests

New items arrived

Raffles

birthday specials.

Restaurants can text when a table is ready.

Send basic info about an item

Basic info about you

Photos of products

for Real Estate you may want to send the property description

Property virtual tous.

New property listing

Link to websites

Appointment remiders

Meeting reminders

Networking events

Special promos

Emergency alerts

Events

Fundraisings

Time to refil your prescription

Reminder to set next appointment

There are probably many more ways to use mobile marketing in your busienss. Remember that text messages are usually received within seconds of sending, which means it is a great delivery method and is more reliable than e-mail.. you don’t need a special phone to received messages, most phones have this capability.

Americans sent over 90 billion text messages just last month, that is a lot more than voice calls.

You might not be texting a lot but you are not your audience. Mobile marketing is simple, effective and very low cost so there is no reason to not use this as a way to keep in front of your audience.

Basically you choose some keywords that you display in other marketing amterials like flyers, car window etc. People dial a number and input the keyword. They will see a personalized message(ex coupon) and now you have access and permission to send that person other messages. Be careful not to over do it. Ideally not more than 2 messages a week.

We get a lot of questions about our favorite social media tools. Well, most social media tools can be useful in one moment or another and when they help you convert prospects into customers or strengthen the relationship with existing customers, I tend to love them.

There is one social tool that I think is one of the best things out there for savvy business owners.

It is the QR code. This simple code does something that every small business owner should dream about every night. It creates a bridge between the printed or offline world to the online world.

How powerful is that?

I don’t know about you but when I started my business money was not easily available and every penny spent counted. One thing that annoyed me a lot was going to networking meetings and passing some flyers knowing most of them would end up in the trash really soon. If at that time QR codes were around things would be different.

QR codes stand for quick response codes. They store a lot of data- around 250 characters. Not enough? Well, it is a lot more than a tweet and people are doing just fine marketing themselves with tweets.

The QR codes can be scanned with any smart phone and will take the person to a web page, a coupon, a contest, whatever you can imagine. Just think of the possibilities. They are simple to create and very inexpensive. People can check right away and get the offer right away too.

Authors for example can have QR codes at the end of their book with an offer. Yes, I know you can add a web address to a page but let’s face it, how many times have you gotten a book or a flyer with a web adreesand took to your computer to check the URL? For me, most of the times I make a mental note to check the URL and then just forget.

I think QR codes can become huge allies for small business owners. Maybe what is missing is just some ideas on how to use the codes, so here is a list I compiled:

linking to full text journals from print journals; making mobile friendly videos available at the point of need; embedding videos & links to extra help online in printed guides.

QR Code on bus stations to allow you to purchase ticket without typing the message.

At bus stations with the schedule

Positioning is not a simple thing. you don’t get done in one day. You need to answer several questions in order to know how to position yourself in the market as a small business owner. You need to know exactly who is your ideal client, in what business you are really in and what is the end result your provide.

You may get quite close to the perfect positioning but there will be some refining over time either because your business changes or the market changes.

Have always in mind that there are two main reasons that impact sales conversion: the level of trust people have in your company and how clear is your message to your target audience. Positioning has to do with both of them.

We try to refine our promise to the market every now and then because we think that although it is ok, was never perfect. We finally think we have something that will resonate well with our audience and makes the message really clear about what we do.

It is: Your modern marketing GPS.

I don’t know about you but I love my GPS. It took a lot of frustration out of my life and quite a few arguments between my daughter and me. i don’t get lost anymore and I arrive wherever I’m going with no anxiety and on time. We named our GPS Nicky. We are about to buy another one for our geoaching experiences.

They are a piece of new technology that don’t invade your life and are extremely useful.

We believe that what we do as marketing advisors is pretty similar. We provide the kind of knowledge that people can apply and see results. They don’t feel overwhelmed or anxious and can track results. We can guide them to amazing new places in their business and lead them through business breakthroughs.

So we are quite content with this promise.

Tell me about yours

Did you know that less than 2% of typical website visitors complete a transaction and also that the average website receives only ten visitors a day?

This is only 6 transactions a month!

That is not very exciting!

It is also clear that if you just put a site out there and don’t take very specific action to convert better, you will never see a good return in sales.

There are two things that you need to pay a lot of attention and work towards improving:

1- increase the traffic to your website. This can be done through SEO, Pay per click or social media. Hopefully you will use all of them.
2- Increase the rate of conversion from visitor to leads to buyers. so, you need to capture some of the visitors and conert them into leads and then into buyers.
In order to do that you might want to offer an ethical bribe that they give name and e-mail to get it. Those e-mails will go to an auto-responder program where you can do proper follow-up in order to get them to buy.
You will also make sure that your website is very clear in which path your visitors need to follow. what they need to click next, what they will get and how many clicks it will take them to get waht they want.
You want as fewer clicks as possible when asking them to buy something and you want to make the purchase process as simple as possible.

60% of sales are lost in the checkout process. This is a lot! Some of the resons why this happens are: asking for irrelevant or too much information in the checkout, too many screens before transaction is complete, name of product different than what was offered.
The next thing to improve conversion is to pay attention to your follow-up strategies.

Leads need to go to an auto-responder system where you have sequential messages increasing credibility and asking for the sale.
Remember that if people don’t buy from you, usually the main reason is that they don’t trust you. Use messages, newsletters, videos, video testimonials and direct mail to increase the level of trust.

From moment zero, when you think about your website, think how you will improve conversion into sales.

I’ve pasted below a post from FourSquare.com on a promotion Starbucks is launching.

It is exciting to see how offline businesses can benefit from technology to market their businesses. What is not exciting is looking at all the small businesses that could do the same but just keep waiting to jump and try new ways of promoting their business until it is too late.

Foursquare is one way to bridge an offline business with online technology, but there are other things small business should look into like the QR codes.

These codes are an amazing bridge between offline media and online media and businesses in the US should be using them more. After all they can be easily created, can be free and be very effective. You might not be using it, but remember, you are not your audience.

Here is the post I mentioned earlier:

Facebook may be teaming with McDonald’s, but Foursquare refuses to be outdone in adding big brands to its portfolio. Starbucks is increasing their partnership with Foursquare by offering a mayor special at select locations across the US from May 17 through June 28. Mayors will receive $1 off a Frappuccino beverage by showing the unlock screen on their phone to the barista.

Starbucks is a frequent experimenter in the social media space, with a heavy presence on Facebook and Twitter. In fact, Foursquare and Starbucks have previously teamed to offer the Barista badge to users who check in to five or more Starbucks locations. At that time the NY Times’ Bits Blog reported Starbucks was excited about Foursquare because “it’s where the intersection between digital and physical starts to get interesting,” said Chris Bruzzo, vice president for brand, content and online at Starbucks. “Starbucks loves that, because we’re always looking for that intersection, which we think is the evolution of social networks.”

The biggest problem I see with this initiative is that Starbucks employees are not prevented from holding the mayorship of their stores. For instance, at one local Starbucks the mayor is an employee with 40 checkins over the past two months. It would be almost impossible for an honest-to-goodness customer to become mayor of that venue and unlock the mayor special. Starbucks has claimed most of their stores as the owner, but they haven’t added any of the local employees as staff, which would prevent them from holding the mayorship.

Starbucks becomes the largest major national chain to offer a mayor special nationwide. Partnering with Starbucks will certainly help propel Foursquare use into the mainstream as users at more than 11,000 locations will be exposed to the Foursquare concept for an extended period of time.

Most service professionals use only one or two ways to market their business and keep doing the same thing for years. Two examples are postcards and mailers. While these methods can bring good results, it is based on you having or buying a list every time you need new clients.

The internet receives millions of searches a day from people looking for specific services and products. These are very targeted prospects ready to buy.
When people look for you online, do you show among the first results without paying for clicks?

Have you heard of local search?
When people look for your services on Google, a Google map shows up showing the local results. Are you on Google Maps? Even if you are, are you showing for the different types of services you provide?
I’m asking you this because many businesses are listed on Google maps but they don’t show for their main search terms or show only for one of them.
There is more. When people are searching for a service like yours from their mobile phones, do you show up?

35% of all online searches contain a city, state or zip code. If you’re not showing up you are leaving a lot of money on the table.
The internet has now surpassed print Yellow Pages and newspaper as a primary source for local consumer service information. And the adoption of smart phones will only add to these numbers; 27 percent of all mobile searches are for local information.

When I mentioned that you can benefit from this without spending a penny, I refer to the fact that Google will not charge you for the listings, nor the directories that will help people find your business over the phone.
You just need to do it right and you can have your business showing for different search terms, have it listed on local directories that will drive traffic to your business and will show on smart phone applications that are geo-based, so people will find you when using their phones.

This is part of what Google calls Local Marketing and is one of the best ways to get more clients and spend less.
This is so important to Google that when you type a service on the search bar that contains a service that is supposed to be local even if you don’t type a city, it will provide local results only.
Go ahead and give it a try. Go to Google and type “Restaurants”. You will see that the results shown are all local.
You just cannot ignore the power this has and not have your business listed. Have in mind that 75% of all online activity is related to local. 54% of the US population has already substituted online searches for books, yellow, blue or any other color.

While the strategy here is a simple one, I can assure you that most of your competition is not paying attention to this and are still offering the same offers using the same channels they have used for years.

I know you are different and you want to stay ahead of the game. You want to attract clients without a lot of work and without spending a lot of money. You understand that things have changed, the economy has changed and the way people buy has changed. It just doesn’t make any sense to keep marketing to them the same way!
Did you know we can do the work for you and list you on the maps, on geo-based applications and local directories?

The normal investment is only $350, but just for my subscribers i’m offering the same package for $250 for the next 24 hours. After that, it goes back to normal.

All the talk today is about the like button feature that Facebook implemented last week. It is said to be a game changer. Webmonkey did a very good post on how to add the button to your page. Here I have pasted that post.

Adding Facebook ‘Like’ Buttons to Your Site Is Damn Easy

By Michael Calore

I want to offer a quick look inside the technology behind Facebook’s Open Graph initiative to show how easy it is to mark up your website and let Facebook users interact with it.

This is only a part of the broad Open Graph strategy the company announced at its 2010 F8 developer conference. (Read our full coverage of the keynote).

Basically, Facebook is offering up a set of widgets — it calls them Social Plug-ins — that you can drop into any web page to make that page more “Facebooky.” There’s a Like button, a Recommendations widget that shows what other pages people’s friends are reading, an Activity Stream widget that shows a simplified version of the visitor’s personal Facebook news feed, and a Facebook Bar, a toolbar site owners can float at the bottom of the screen that serves all of these things at once.

Using the Open Graph widgets, you can incorporate some of Facebook’s key social interaction features into any page on the web.

The most important Social Plug-in, and the one we’ll no doubt see the most use of, is the Like button. Put it on your page, and if a Facebook user visits your site and clicks on it, a link to your page gets added to their activity stream. Suddenly, all of their friends can see that link, click on it and be led directly to your page. When that second person arrives, the Like button is personalized for them — it shows which of their friends have already clicked it, and when they click on it, a link to your page gets added to their stream.

There are actually two versions of the Like button, one that uses an i-frame and one that uses JavaScript.

The i-frame version

For the simple i-frame version, it’s one line of code:

view source

print?

1

<iframe src=

"Some Facebook URL"

scrolling=

"no"

frameborder=

"0"

allowTransparency=

"true"

style=

"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:px"

>

You can generate your own bit of i-frame code for any URL of your choosing (and tweak the parameters) using the tool at the bottom of this page on Facebook’s developer site

The content inside the i-frame is hosted by Facebook, and Facebook can detect whether the user is logged in or not using a cookie. If the person is logged in to Facebook, the stuff in the i-frame is personalized for them. It shows a list of their friends who have also liked the page. If they’re not logged in, they’ll be prompted to log in or to join.

The JavaScript version

The slightly more complicated JavaScript version of the button utilizes two other bits of Facebook technology: the XFBML
fb:like
tag and Facebook’s JavaScript SDK.

view source

print?

1

<fb:like href=

"Your URL"

layout=

"standard"

show-faces=

"true"

width=

"450"

action=

"like"

colorscheme=

"light"

/>

You get all the same personalization features as the i-frame version, so each logged in Facebook user who visits your site sees which of their friends have clicked the “Like” button, and a link to your site gets shared across their social graph. Also like the i-frame version, you can tweak the parameters however you want.

But the JavaScript version offers some extras. In the code above, you can also see there’s a
show-faces
flag that will show the profile pictures of your friends who have clicked on the Like button.

The JavaScript version also gives your visitors the chance to add a comment to the link when they click on the Like button.

If a user is not logged in to Facebook when they visit your site, you can authenticate them automatically using OAuth 2.0, which Facebook now supports. Full details are here.

Tag up your page

When a user Likes your page, it does more than just pass the link around. If you’re a band, or you run a site for a movie, you can add some semantic markup to your page that tells Facebook the type of thing your page represents. That way, if I go to your movie page and “Like” your movie, Facebook can easily add a link to your movie’s website in my profile. If I keep a list of my favorite movies in my Facebook profile, a link to your public website will be added there, where it belongs.

This part is optional, but it’s recommended. Just add some Open Graph meta tags to your page so Facebook knows what you are. There are four that are required, the rest are gravy. You can claim your entity’s identity by picking the most relevant content type. The list is long — musician, sports team, blog, drink, hotel, movie, book, city, cause — so whatever your page represents, Facebook can understand it and deal with the link properly when somebody clicks your Like button.

Get used to it

Like buttons are a step up from the other sharing buttons that have been on the web for years. Unlike those for Digg and Twitter, which just display a blind count of aggregate clicks from everyone on the social network, the Facebook Like button shows you how your friends are interacting with the page you’re on.

We can certainly expect other social networks to pick up on this model and start serving up lists of your friends, and maybe even their faces, along side their own social widgets.

As if the number of icons and little doo-dads at the bottom of blog posts wasn’t distracting enough…

I’m not a game person but FourSquare caught my attention since the beginning. Some call it a game but I see it as a location-based application that works with most smart phones.

Nashlah started using FourSquare on its first moments. She just loves it. Even though, right now, there are a lot of professionals saying they know all about it and are super users, you should take a look at what she’s done in a small place like Salt Lake City: Nashlah on FourSquare

Most social media gurus focus on tactics and telling people how to use the tool, but they seldom talk about business strategy.

Let me show you how businesses can benefit from Foursquare. Have in mind that the application is addicting because users will compete for mayorships and badges which is something that ends up benefiting businesses. The app promotes exploring the town and trying new things which is great in itself. It will tell you if a place is trendy by the number of check-ins, and if you accomplish some requirements that vary from business to business you may win a badge.

Why is all this important to businesses: visibility, popularity, more customer loyalty, more business.

Why do people do it? They like to compete, they have ego, it is fun and they can promote your business even though you might not be aware of it happening.

Have in mind that people want to become mayor of locations and oust previous mayors. When this happens they get posted publicly to twitter and Facebook with your business name and a link to your business’ profile page on foursquare.com. The same may happen when they arrive at your business.

Well, there are already savvy businesses using Foursquare to promote their business. A bar in San Francisco gives free drinks to the mayor of their location, and gives $2 off any performance night for those that show the phone and prove they checked in. This obviously motivates people to come back to the business and to use even more the application. In Las Vegas if you become the Mayor of the Miracle Mile Shops you’ll get your face and name on the 126-foot LED video screen. Big companies like Brave network, Pepsi and the New York Times are also using Foursquare. AJBombers a restaurant, did a Foursquare party and increased business in 110%.

Foursquare is already working on showing banners with the promotions.

The other day we were checking in at the movies and a message popped up telling us to try a restaurant around the corner with a coupon for us to use. What a proactive way to promote businesses in nearby locations!

The application allows people to recommend the place and suggest favorite dishes. It allows businesses and people to connect, bring foot traffic to the place and recommend to others. What more can a business wish for?

Badges for your business and badges to sponsor events is another possibility. For the users the more badges they have the more fun it is.

So, to put it into perspective, here are a few things you can use Foursquare in your business for:

Coupons

Special rewards for mayors or check-ins

Encourage customers to come back

Special promotions on slow days.

Be a sponsor of Foursquare leaderboard.

Brand awareness

Deeper connection between customer and patron

Instant feedback

Promote events

I always say that the gold rush today is for being found, and getting attention.

About the being found part: Google and Bing maps are showing Foursquare venues when people search locally. Foursquare pages rank on search engines which means your business name, phone number and link come up.

Foursqare has the potential to revolutionize social media and turn it into a form of currency.

Out of the over 1.4 Million venues, only about 1200 venues have special offers. Less than 1% of businesses are going after this amazing opportunity. It is free.

Remind me how much you’ve spent with advertising that didn’t work? So what are you waiting for?
